Looking back at the books I've recorded reading this year, I notice I'm in a bit of a rut. Or more accurately, I've almost exclusively read fiction. The vast majority of that is crime fiction, but that doesn't bother me as it is my favourite genre and it's useful for work to have a wide knowledge of a genre. According to my list I haven't read any non fiction, though I didn't keep track of cookery or food books and I have had a few of those from the library. I had a Nigella Lawson fit during the summer and read her books then. It seems a bit odd that I haven't read anything else that isn't fiction, but may well be true. There is usually some sort of history lying about that I dip in and out of, but I frequently don't read books like that all the way through. Often I just flick through a chapter or two and then return to the library. Biographies and autobiographies have never really had much of an attraction for me. There is a newish book about Thomas Hardy that I would like to read, and must track down after the weekend. I also have the memoirs of a lighthouse keeper on loan at the moment and must read soon. I love lighthouses and wish there were still manned lighthouses. That would be a job I would love, I think.

Dec. 31st, 2006 11:01 pmVery, very windy now. It would be reassuring if objects would stop hitting our living room window. Just read that the party and fireworks in Newcastle have been cancelled, nt surprising given the strength of the wind.
We've watched Wayne's World on TV and now we've put Jools Holland on to see us into the New Year. I have opened a bottle of cava, which is fine, dry and crisp and rather nice and I'm going to go back to loll on the sofa, eat crackers, brie, cheddar and tomatoes while reading my current book, Heart of the World by Linda Barnes.
Low key New Year is just what I want as I frequently find it depressing. I'm not sure why, exactly, but it may be because I'm bad at endings. Not so much the year ending but the Christmas festive season winding down, and the fact that people always have such expctations of a fantastic night.
